Description
The ability to communicate in a structured and understandable way is essential for supporting decision-making in a company. Presentations are the standard communication tool for this. But one party always has to do the work: either the presenter or the addressee. We explain, writing as fellow practitioners, how to structure complex problems for communication in a logical way and formulate messages that are self-explanatory.
Professional communication is based on three elements: suitable content, clear structure and precise graphic design. In this book we outline an eight-step process that focuses on structure as the fundamental link between content and design. Using a fictional case study that highlights our method, we show how to structure topics so that you can get to grips with even the most complex problems.
PYRAMIDS – THE MOST STABLE STRUCTURES IN THE WORLD
For over 4,000 years, the pyramids of Giza have fascinated mankind. The mighty tombs of the pharaohs impress not only with their size and architecture. Their stability is also unique. They are the only one of the seven wonders of the ancient world that has survived. And this is not least due to their construction. Each of the massive stones rests on at least two other stones. No storm, no tempest is able to harm this construction — let alone topple it.
And it is precisely this construction principle that we want to make use of in building our argumentation. Your argumentation framework should also be as stable as an Egyptian pyramid in order to achieve the goal of your communication.
FOCUSSING ON THE ESSENTIALS
We owe the pyramidal principle to the American Barbara Minto. In order to improve the communication skills of her colleagues, the then McKinsey consultant developed the basics of pyramidal thinking at the end of the 1960s. Since then, this working technique has become a globally recognized method for sorting through large amounts of information and presenting the central content in a pointed, simple way. In short: It is the proven key to structure. So what is so special, so revolutionary about the pyramid?
Obviously, communication contents are easier to understand if the important contents are mentioned right at the beginning. This insight is independent of any presentation software, which did not exist in the 1960s.
